How does one become a DGP?
To become a DGP, first you have to become an IPS. For this, after completing graduation, the candidate has to give the UPSC Civil Services Examination, in which after being successful, the candidate gets appointment to the post of IPS. After becoming an IPS, you can become a DGP only after several years of service and promotion. This is a long and laborious process. In which only those who make continuous efforts are successful.
Eligibility to become DGP
- First of all, the candidate must have passed 12th from any stream.
- After this the candidate will have to complete graduation from a recognized university.
- To become a DGP, it is mandatory to pass the IPS examination conducted by UPSC. Only IPS officers can become DGP after getting promotion.
Age Limit
The age limit required for the IPS exam to become a DGP is as follows-
- Age limit for general category candidates is 21 to 30 years.
- 3 years relaxation is given for OBC category, i.e. maximum age is 33 years.
- There is a relaxation of 5 years in the age limit for SC/ST category, i.e. maximum age is 35 years.

DGP Salary
Since DGP is the highest post in the police department, this post also gets the highest salary. The monthly salary of DGP is around 2,25,000. Along with this, he also gets many other facilities. These include government accommodation and services like watchman, cook, one government vehicle and driver, facilities like medical insurance, free electricity and free telephone facilities.
